We may also disclose your information: to other users as part of running the marketplace (your display name and listing details are visible to others, and messages you send are delivered to the recipient); to law enforcement, the Privacy Commissioner, courts and regulators where we are lawfully required to do so or it is reasonably necessary to enforce our terms; and to a buyer of our business if we sell or restructure it — your information would be transferred as part of that transaction, with notice where practical, and used under this notice or its successor.
NewRide is a New Zealand service, but some of the service categories above involve providers that store or process data outside New Zealand — notably our email delivery, SMS verification, error-monitoring and analytics providers in the United States, and our payment processor's global infrastructure. Where this occurs, the transfer relies on the provider's standard contractual clauses and their certifications or safeguards (for example, PCI-DSS compliance and the EU–US/UK–US data frameworks). Your core marketplace data — accounts, listings, messages, and photos — is stored by our cloud data-storage provider in Australia, which the Privacy Act 2020 treats as a comparable-jurisdiction transfer.
We retain private messages for up to 12 months, after which the message body is automatically replaced with a sealed hash while metadata is kept for aggregate audit.
Threads under a legal hold (disputes, scam reports, or law-enforcement requests) are exempt from redaction until released.
We protect your information with encryption in transit, access controls that limit data to the systems and people who need it, and scrubbing of personal content from error-monitoring traces. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security, but we review our practices as the service evolves.
You have the right to access and correct your personal information (Privacy Act 2020, principles 6 and 9). Contact us to exercise these rights.
Beyond the automatic 12-month retention window, you may request earlier redaction of your messages by contacting us. Threads subject to a legal hold (disputes, scam reports, or law-enforcement requests) are exempt until released.
If you believe we have breached the Privacy Act 2020, please contact us first so we can try to fix it. You may also make a complaint to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner (privacy.org.nz), which can investigate it.
We may update this notice from time to time. The “last updated” date at the top of this page reflects the most recent change, and we will notify you of material changes in-app or by email where practical.
